Ford Recalls Nearly 300,000 F-150 Trucks

YOUNG & YOUNG APC

Ford has issued a safety recall for 292,311 F-150 pickup trucks due to safety concerns. Ford has limited its recall to certain model years 2014-2017 Ford F-150 vehicles equipped with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine. The recall includes model years 2015 through 2017 Ford-F150 vehicles built in Dearborn, Michigan between October 1, 2014, and August 1, 2016; and model years 2014 through 2017 Ford F-150 vehicles built in Kansas City, Missouri between September 1, 2014, and August 1, 2016.

Ford has recalled the aforementioned F-150 vehicles because of a potential leak in the brake master cylinder. In affected pickups, a leak in the brake master cylinder may result in brake fluid leaking into the brake booster. This could lead to reduced brake function in the vehicle’s front wheels. Ford has claimed that this problem is limited to the front brake function. While the affected vehicle’s rear braking ability may be left unaffected, the loss of front brake power may cause a change in the brake pedal travel and feel. These conditions can increase the stopping distance of the vehicle, which could cause the driver to lose control and increase the risk of a crash. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, vehicles affected by this problem may display several warnings, including a chime, trouble lights in the dashboard, and a message in the instrument cluster information system. Ford has stated a driver may encounter the above-referenced warnings depending upon the amount of brake fluid loss from the brake master cylinder front-wheel circuit into the brake booster.

Ford has acknowledged seven reported “low-speed/low impact” accidents and two injuries as a result of this brake fluid leak concern. Ford’s proposed remedy to this ongoing safety concern is to replace the brake master cylinder and inspect the brake booster, replacing it as necessary. Ford was expected to notify owners of the recalled vehicles in late June 2020. If Ford has been unable to repair your Ford F-150 truck within the warranty period, you may be protected under the California Lemon Law. Experienced California lemon law attorneys at Young & Young APC can help you evaluate any potential Lemon Law claim.

Does Your Ford F-150 Pickup Truck Qualify Under California Lemon Law?

Your Ford F-150 vehicle may qualify under the California Lemon Law, also known as the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act if Ford’s authorized dealerships have been unable to repair a “nonconformity” or defect after a “reasonable” number of repair attempts within the original warranty period. The California Lemon Law defines “nonconformity” as a problem that substantially impairs the use, value, or safety of the vehicle to the buyer or lessee. The California Lemon Law does not require a specific number of repair attempts to meet the reasonable opportunity to repair requirement. Under the California Lemon Law, a “reasonable” number of repair attempts is determined on a case-by-case basis according to the severity of the defect. The requirement may also be fulfilled if your vehicle has been at the repair facility for 30 or more cumulative days for a particular problem (not necessarily all at once.)

What Am I Entitled to If My Ford F-150 Truck Qualifies Under California Lemon Law?

Under the California Lemon Law, if a vehicle manufacturer is unable to repair a “nonconformity” after a “reasonable” number of attempts, the manufacturer must either promptly repurchase or replace the vehicle. If your Ford F-150 qualifies as a “lemon” under the California Lemon Law, you may be entitled to one of the following:

  1. A refund of your down payment, monthly payments, and a full lease/loan payoff (less a statutory mileage offset for the distance driven from the time of purchase until the first repair attempt.)
  2. A similar replacement vehicle.
  3. A cash settlement.
